General Race News and Tidbits

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Curious if the big pack, Jessie R, Richie, Aaron, Joar, Peter, etc, that came into Takotna around midnight are planning to 24 hour there.
Anyone with Insider know if any if these teams have declared a 24?

Some Mushers "declare" their 24 at each checkpoint where they plan to rest for any length of time. Then they can leave whenever they choose without penalty. Before trackers some mushers were known for sneaking out of checkpoints. The 24 is only recorded when it is completed. The race does not report the 24 when it is declared, only upon completion. That keeps us and their competitors guessing about their race strategy.

mixed reports now on if Nic P will scratch or not, last on live stream is from RM Norman that he will leave two dogs behind at Nikolai and contiune. tracker says he is resting in Nikolai in 36th position so i wonder if Mark has talked him out of scratching and into dropping kristy and Joee?

Understand txbennett, just wondering if someone with access to Insider and the videos heard mention that one of these teams had decided to take their 24 in Takotna.
Seems like at this point they are getting into the heat of they day.

You all probably know this. I've been busy all morning and am just checking after several hours. SO...how awesome is it that there are 4 women--FOUR--in the current standings. Paige and Michelle in 1st and 2nd!!! And Aliy and Jessie in 8th and 10th!! Whoot, whoot, How cool is that.
