Ophir > Cripple > Ruby on the river

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Brent used 12 hours from Ophir to Cripple, I have no idea how the trail is setting up on that stretch?

None of the ones taking 24 in Takotna stopped in Ophir (of course), so I guess they will divide the travel to Ruby in three?
Anyhow, Jessie Royer left Ophir at 03:01am, 12 hour traveling time is 3pm into Cripple, that is 7 hours before Brent can leave. But as she (and the others) have already gone for two hours from Takotna to Ophir, she will need most of that 7 hours to rest. But I would say she is a head of Brent, but not by much.

Irony is sometimes hysterically funny.

Yupp. In 2014. I was there :-) And he did have the lead until the storm hit him.

Insider reported that, for his half-way award, Brent had the choice of $3000 in gold, or a new Samsung phone and cell coverage for a year. Since he doesn't actually get cell reception where he lives, he opted for the gold (which, tbh, sounds like a better deal anyway). :)

His dogs looked great coming in last night.

(Note: It looks like Brent left "Hero" off his team this time around. You may remember from YQ, Hero was one of his wheel dogs who insisted on flopping down on his side like he was dead every time they stopped. Brent said he'll do that if it's a 5 mile run or a 70 mile run, but I could only imagine the flap it would create by him doing it on camera, so probably best he stayed home for PR's sake. <eye roll> )
