COVID 19 and Nome Activites

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Postby libby the lab » Thu Mar 12, 2020 4:21 pm

I think we all new this was probably coming :(

The Nome Nugget

IN RESPONSE TO PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS OVER THE COVID 19 Virus: The Nome Common Council decided in an emergency meeting today to close city facilities: Old St. Joe's, Rec Center, Richard Foster Building (including Museum and Library), the swimming pool, Nome Public Schools for afterschool activities, the Visitor Center and to limit access to the Mini Convention Center as staff sees fit. This means: there won't be the Lonnie O'Connor Basketball Tournament, Iditarod banquet and Musher's Meet and Greet is postponed; Iditarod Arts and Crafts Fair is canceled. Council member Brown said the public is encouraged to NOT COME to Nome. Iditarod dog teams will still arrive and will be welcomed to Nome. #Iditarod,#COVID-19, #Nome, #CityofNome, #LonnieO'ConnorBasketballTournament

I guess it makes sense. Without all the visitors showing up, they stood a good chance of ducking the whole thing. But with visitors coming from all over, it could likely creep in.

A little perspective is in order:
There are currently 1200 confirmed instances of people in the US testing positive for COVID-19. That's not necessarily people sick from the virus - just a positive test for the presence of viral genome. Based on ACTUAL DATA FROM THE CDC, if you venture out into a random crowd in the United State tomorrow, you are 2X more likely to run into someone shedding legionaire's disease, 9X more likely to run into someone who is shedding tuberculosis, and 140X more likely to run into someone who is shedding influenza. The bottom line is that our fellow human beings have been filthy little disease carrying vessels far longer and just as extensively than when COVID-19 showed up. Against the backdrop of all of the infectious respiratory diseases that can be transmitted by close contact from human to human, COVID-19 is yet to make the top 5. Yet we managed to enjoy life and not hide shivering in fear behind locked doors, surrounded by piles of hoarded toilet paper (seriously, toilet paper?). Common sense: don't let sick people cough and sneeze on you and if you are sick, don't cough and sneeze on people. And wash your hands before picking your nose. The vast majority of you will survive to see what Kim Kardashian does next. :D

News from Norway is that everyone returning to Norway must be quarantined.

It's reported there's a ban on flights US to Europe so wondering about their going home arrangements. Could go via UK maybe.

Are any Norwegian mushers running dog teams from Norway or are they all AK teams?

Thomas Wærner and Tom Frode Johansen run their own dogs. Tom Frodes team came off Yukon Quest with Nora Själin :-)

I think there still are flights between US and Europe, US citizen are allowed home. Anyway, they won't be heading home for some time yet, anyone's guess how the situation is then

Thanks Mira. Good to know!

Is it correct that the dogs don't need quarantine? And does 'quarantine' mean 'stay at home' - so the dogs and musher will remain together?
