Up the coast (Kaltag - Koyuk)

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Unalakleet may be little late for the front runners to make another adjustment, if the first notification regarding the checkpoint closure has already changed their strategy.

No race judge, no vets, no dog drop, etc at Shak. Unk to Koyuk is about a 90 mile run with "less than normal" support, although the teams will have their Shak drop bags available to pick up as they go past. Hopefully they will have a current report about the conditions they will encounter on the sound.

I have trouble keeping up, the note I find at iditarod.com it says the cp will be as nulato, outside the community but vets, drop bags, heet and straw?

I had the impression that Shaktoolik never has been the biggest cp.

As for now it seems the front teams are doing as they usual do.

The party at the cabin (or tripod?) will go through unk to shake, rest and resupply before the trip over the sound.

Anyone seen any news on this year's ice condition?

Mira, temps have been seasonably cool to cold this winter, so I think the Ice is in good shape. They will be able to take the usual route from Shelter cabin to Koyuk I think.
