Koyuk > Elim > Golovin Bay > White Mtn

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Mitch into WM.
Thomas was a bit faster on the run from Elim and has 5+ hours on Mitch.

Thomas really has run a great race and I think the conditions suited his training - soft, sloggy snow.

Afterwards you often wonder "how did they do that?" - I know Lance used the "Kaltag > Unk in one push" move to win back in the day. And at the time, you never know if it's going to pay off or fall flat (witness Aliy going to Iditarod last year - a gamble which didn't pay off, but could just as easily have worked in her favor).

It would have been fun to see if the teams behind could catch him after Shak... if only the conditions hadn't turned balmy. Kind of anti-climatic in a way (unless you're Thomas - :) ).

In the meantime, wow, do we have a race for 5th-10th! I need to rewind the tracker to see how this played out - can Paige pass the group of four ahead of her and leapfrog into 6th?

That would be nice.

Remember the days of the long-distance camera at WM, that we could swing back and forth and admire the bug on the lens?

This is what we've got now - how things have changed! Great job ID, on this kind of footage - this from the live camera at WM:

Jessie bedding her team down (Thomas' dogs in their orange Qrill coats in the background).

And a more zoomed out shot, showing Jessie and Mitch's [edited - not Thomas'] teams (Thomas [edit - not Mitch's] are just off camera to the left). Mitch [edited - not Thomas'] is feeding his team. He's free to leave in about 1.5 hours.

The conditions must be so variable out there - their speeds are going up and down with no real consistency:

This was the last snapshot of their speed. (and Paige has apparently passed Travis)

Wade 5.1
Ryan 6.3
Joar 4.7
Travis 6.0
Paige 6.5

And to add interest to the mix, Ramey Smyth is just coming through the hills on the way to Golovin Bay - he's 8 miles behind this group... which in theory puts him 1 to 1.5 hours behind... would you want that on the last 70 mile run to Nome?

Trying to do some Math.

Brent is nearly to the edge of Golovin Bay at "Mile 883" (which is just before where the weird mileage vortex happens), with Aaron a mile behind.

Our gang of 5 are at mile 872-875. So 8 to 11 miles.

Wade, with 8 miles to go to that spot:
@ 5 mph = 1.6 hrs
@ 5.5 mph = 1.45 hrs
@ 6 mph = 1.33 hrs
@ 6.5 mph = 1.23 hrs

Travis, with 10 miles to go to that spot:
@ 5 mph = 2 hrs
@ 5.5 mph = 1.8 hrs
@ 6 mph = 1.66 hrs
@ 6.5 mph = 1.54 hrs

Wade is currently plodding at 4.7 mph, having just crossed back onto the ice after Golovin Spit... while Joar is going 7.0 mph and Paige 6.8 mph.

Given the above numbers, they could pass him... unless of course he's going that slowly because of the conditions, in which case, they'll also be plodding when they get there...

Not sure the slower trail has been a big help for Thomas.
In looking back at his runs, he made a strong push from Yentna to Skwentna and has stayed in the mix since.
Maybe the "speed" teams, Mitch, Paige and Nic (had he not melted down) could have challenged him with a faster trail, but he has run a very good race with an excellent team.

Thomas receiving his Northrim Bank "Achieve More" award for being first to arrive at WM:

Man: We look forwards to seeing you arrive in Nome

Thomas: I've actually been here before - in 2014 - and Jeff King was sitting here in bright sunshine... and he didn't get to the finish, so it's not over until it's over - anything can happen. But I think it looks good.

Footage of his arrival - says going over Golovin trail was drifted and slow... and Golovin the trail got really good - it was nice to actually drive dogs, instead of watching them swim through the snow. Fun to finish so fast. Asked about only stopping two hours in Elim - saids he knows they can do it, and they look pretty good coming in.

From the camera in WM, it's pretty windy and snowing there - Jessie is busy putting coats on her dogs, and talking to Mitch next door.

Thomas getting ready to leave in 35 minutes - it's snowing lightly. He's taking off the dog coats and all the dogs are standing and looking attentive (except one that he left the coat on - that one is still curled up). he's putting on booties.
