Koyuk > Elim > Golovin Bay > White Mtn

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Call from Martin in Elim. 1.5 - 2 feet of fresh snow & substantial wind is making travel difficult for dog teams. Martin is hunkered down with 14 happy, well fed friends. There’s lots of speculation on what will happen next. Seems the elements are conspiring to make things even more difficult than usual. Martin is in good spirits, he’s pretty good at making the best of a bad situation.

They are all safe in Elim. I guess the party in Elim are waiting for rerouting off the trail, and then I suspect we will se a caravan of mushers.

Now they’re back in Elim. Never seen anything like this since I started following the race in ‘99.

This is mindboggling. Sure wish we had a clearer sense of what is going on. By the color of their tracker flags, it appears all the teams are resting in Elim, but nobody is listed as "In Elim". Imagine the confusion in coms, conversations, messages flying, proposals thrown around.

From Happy Trails Kennels (Buser) Facebook page:
"The Elim 11 have returned to Elim. Trail breakers couldn’t find the trail. It was windy up on top but good to get the dogs out for some exercise. The checkers and vets had the checkpoint all tidied up but now they crew is back. Dogs are enjoying the fresh straw. Time to regroup and decide what to do tomorrow."

Tomorrow! Sounds like they'll be hunkered down there for a while. Can't imagine what the situation is out there.

Martin checked into Elim at 3/18 22:54:00. That is.. 1.5 days ago? :o

I can't remember anything like this either.. and if we add the situation before Safety as well :?

A post from Buser, yesterday:
Martin & the crew are on their 36 hour layover in Elim - oh no, that’s another long race. All joking aside, the teams in Elim are waiting for a weather window, which should come tomorrow, to get back out on the trail. Wet, wet snow and lots of water has been reported in some sections. Making the best of a bad situation is part of the game, seems we are all being tasked with that challenge these days. Everyone should get a good rest tonight.
