Koyuk > Elim > Golovin Bay > White Mtn

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

In looking back at his runs, he made a strong push from Yentna to Skwentna and has stayed in the mix since.
Maybe the "speed" teams, Mitch, Paige and Nic (had he not melted down) could have challenged him with a faster trail, but he has run a very good race with an excellent team.

He said that the soft conditions were pretty typical for where he trains in Norway and that his dogs are used to pulling, rather than galloping.

The volunteers are moving a long line of single (plastic-wrapped) straw bales that were alongside Thomas' team into a big tall pile, rather than in a convenientl ine. The bales were starting to collect snow on top, so maybe having them in one big pile, so they collect less snow is a better option?

The camera man just came along and swept snow off the camera lens.

Thomas' dogs all laid down again, once he put booties on.

Looks like Joar and Paige have squeaked past Wade and Ryan, with Travis lagging behind.

Thomas reported that the trail is excellent and fast (or at least was last night) once you get off the ice on Golovin Bay, so expect to see them speed up then.

Actually, there were this nice interview with Joar before the start of Iditarod. He talked a bit about why had moved over, but he also said that usually the Norwegians teams has an disadvantage because the trails in Iditarod is a bit different than what are common in Norway. This years condition however could benefit the Norwegians because of the amount snow making conditions more similar to what we are having in Norway.

For anyone who wants to practice their Norwegian  (https://translate.google.com/ might be of help)
https://www.vg.no/sport/i/OpA8Jw/iditarod-favoritten-det-er-mange-personligheter-blant-disse-hundene

Men akkurat i år kan det ha vært en fordel å forberede seg i Norge, som Thomas Wærner har gjort. Der får du mer trening i å brøyte spor, vind, kjøre i høyfjellet. Det er vi ikke så vant til her.

But this year it might have been an advantage to prepare in Norway, like Thomas Wærner has done. There you have to break trail, wind, mushing in high alpine areas. We aren't used to that here.
