Rerouting of trail

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

As far as I can tell, right now they're on the same trail as the others used. They all had to go up over that saddle:

Looked at the speed, they seem to be going at 1-2mph. Ouch

That's a big hill. Everyone has been slow going up there (and many rest at the top). Kind of like a mini Eagle Summit.

Gah. Get your story straight, Chaplin.

Ignore those last two posts. I was so zoomed in, I didn't realise they were in a totally different location:

But I looked at the map, and it's quite some climb they are doing, but they have only started it. Seems like a bit rougher trail than the other.

You are right, they are also going at much higher speed now (5-6) :(

This is Martin's track:

Ah, that might explain the weird snapshots I got. I thought it was just my GPS glitching. Compare these two:

Nearly back. This was Kaci's chance to go from red-lantern to mid-pack!?

I'm curious as to where the "Old Iditarod Trail" used to go? I don't really see any obvious way through those hills.

I pulled up the USGS Topo for that area and this is what it shows. The yellow is the route the others too. The red line is what this group took (the blue line is an alternate winter trail, but I don't see a way for the red line to join the blue very easily).

Were they supposed to be on the trail on land (as opposed to out on the ice) and missed a marker and headed up that hill thinking that was the hill further along the trail?
