Rerouting of trail

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Rerouting of trail

Postby libby the lab » Thu Mar 19, 2020 8:49 pm

Back of the #iditarod pack update: Hearing the ice on Golovin Bay isn’t safe - someone ended up chest deep In water - trail has to be rerouted around on the shore. Trail breakers leaving Nome to make new trail now. Teams in Elim (and hopefully Koyuk) planning to leave and run new trail at 8 am tomorrow.

there was mention of "open water" by some of the finishers - which I know is a musher's worst nightmare (esp. in white out conditions). And it was 32°F [somewhere... can't remember where? WM? Nome?].

That does not sound good at all. I'm glad they're holding them at the checkpoints.

Wonder if they'll do a staggered start by order of arrival?

I can't remember that the trail has been rerouted on that strecth. To Koyuk several times, to WM? no.

I think the teams in Elim has waited for better weather conditions. I guess most of them want to travel in group anyway. I hope they all get to Nome!

I believe the big storm caused norton sound waters to surge. This happened during Iron dog also, two racers had to be rescued out in Golovin Bay. Also, temps have warmed considerably all across the state...

the weather is brutal too.. Blowing and snowing in the hills can be a B_tch... Breaking trail all the time unless they have a snow machine or 2 breaking trail for them.... Its going to be a long run... I have to give it to Buser for his leadership... Not like he hasn't done this before but at a way younger age... Wish them all a safe run... What an experience for all the rookies and even vets....

I zoomed in and they might have missed the old Iditarod trail. It seems to be behind them. Wouldn't ITC have sent snowmachines out to lay a trail?
They are all lined up 'resting' Buser at mile 860 and last in the line, Murringer at 859. I count 11 markers.
This is good place to need the tenths markings.
