Richard Beneville, Mayor of Nome passed away

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Richard Beneville, Mayor of Nome passed away

Sad news for anyone who ever met him, James Richard Beneville, Mayor of Nome, passed away in Norton Sound Hospital of pneumonia. He was a wonderful ambassador for Nome, and we will miss his trademark comment, “Hello, Central!” which alluded to his love of acting. His tours of Nome were wonderful! Rest in Peace, friend.

Many of us will remember forever Beneville's entertaining presence in the chute at the finish of the Iditarod. What a hoot he was, and how obvious his deep love of Nome. Alaska gives us big personalities, and gives generously--comes with the territory. RIP Mr. Mayor.
