Finger Lake to Rainy Pass to Rohn

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Travis Beals in RP:
Nice hard fast trail like last year. You find yourself creeping above 10 mph and having to have discipline and step on the brake. It's fun to go fast, but it never really does you any good. Doesn't pay off in the long run.

Says they could leave after 3 hours or so, but better to stay 4, then they can run all the way to Buffalo (past Rohn).

Is happy with his timing - happy that the dogs are laying out in the sun. Says it's the most beneficial of the entire race - having the dogs bake their muscles and get a good break. Important to get good warm breaks on them - and stay a little longer to let them take advantage of it.

Hmm, something up with Jessie Holmes? He's been at RP for nearly 7 hours now. Dogs got a bug? Keeping an eye on him.

(It's too soon to take an 8 hour rest).

Edit - spoke too soon - Jessie Homes is up and running, with Paige on his heels. He still has all 14 dogs, while Paige dropped one early on.

Wade at RP:
It's kind of hard when people come ripping past you. But [in the past] it seems like every team I've passed going to Yenta beats me in the end, while every team that passes me on that stretch, I beat them. You kind of want to keep up and you feel like you should be keeping up, but at the same time you think 'you know what, I'll probably catch up later'. I'm taking it easy, giving them a little extra rest here and there, keeping them healthy and happy...so far they're really strong. We're right on track, I wanted to leave here with 11 hours rest [total, so far] and we're leaving here with 11 hours rest. It's a little slower than normal pace, but they're doing really good.
