Dispersement of Patch Earnings

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Dispersement of Patch Earnings

Postby sc-race-fan » Wed Mar 01, 2023 4:30 pm

We no longer have yearly patches for sale, and have an available cash balance. The moderators would like to request suggestions from our members for various donation locations. Please post your suggestions here in this thread, and we will review and make decisions after the race. Thank you to all of you who have supported this forum over the years.

Going to take some thought. Everything I think of has a flip side that says < what about>.

I do think it would be evenhanded for all mushers, and the race in general, if the Iditarod Air Force got a little scratch to offset fuel expenses. I don't know if there is a fund for that, but I will see what I can find, if folks think it's a viable idea.

Maybe we could sponsor a musher? Might be a rookie next year or maybe we could donate sponsor the red lantern, buy pizza for everyone when they get to unk or save it for a first to a checkpoint award for next years race? Do folks want it dispersed this year? Maybe we save it incase we have a musher on the trail having a problem and we can help with funds post race?

What do folks think?

I would like to send John some money to offset his expenses for keeping this forum page active (hosting and website name costs)

I'll agree with Libby ...or somehow ...just enjoy it yourselves for all you've done about/for it.

For those still visiting the Forum:

After much discussion and deliberation, the moderators have determined how to disburse our accumulated patch sales “profit” of $1,350.00. We will send $$450.00 to help reimburse “John Can” for his past and continued hardware housing and webname costs for our forum. Some of the “profits” ($450.00) will be donated to Bering Strait School District for providing past updates, videos, and webcams (longtime buds fondly remember their videos and interviews). and the District continues to have students participating in various broadcasting activities. This donation will support their efforts. The final portion of our “profits” ($450.00) will be donated to The August Fund (www.theaugustfund.com). Their mission is to provide veterinary care, and loving retirement homes for racing sled dogs from Iditarod,Yukon Quest, and professional sprint kennels. We hope that these decisions will be agreeable for our Forum’s members.

Thanks to everyone who made the patches happen!
This well thought out proposal is another example of why the Iditabuds is a great group to follow the Iditarod with.
