It doesn't really belong here, but a nice account of Eddie's adventures in detail, complete with how he got back to his team and some fun stuff with Hunter. Apparently Dallas went to fetch him on a snowmachine.

Pete has been in Elim almost 5 hrs after puling within under 5 miles of Ryan on the run to there from Koyuk. Something must be up :(

Yup, so much for Dallas's nice assessment for Pete's team. Like Dallas said, watching a team enter a check point is not the same as seeing it out in the field. The Top 10 all have between 8-10 dogs, so this years condition must be brutal on the teams. Pete's team may have looked fast, but maybe Ryan's have stamina. Even if slower, staying power is the key...guess we'll see depending on who gets to Wt Mtn first and how they string out from there...I don't mind there being a Bering Sea storm too, makes things interesting...just like last year...

Elsietee, maybe you have a clue on whats going on in Elim...

I just got home, looked at the tracker and could only find Ryan, wondered if he and Pete were together. Then I find Pete together with Ritchie... Really weird

Also looked at the running time to Elim, they are equal..

. In this case, Ryan took the gamble to go and Pete is taking the safe bet and taking a break. Better to rest and recharge. In past races, a couple hour break in Elim with warm water and a place to warm the musher is a good option. Granted, there is an 8 hour rest awaiting in White Mountain, but if Pete is taking a break, it’s because the Team needs it. This is a beautiful dog team and they rely on Pete to make the best decision for them. No musher ever wants to break that special bond of trust.

Pete and Richie just got underway - with Richie leaving just a few minutes ahead.

Per Pete's kennel (I read elsewhere), Pete planned to stop 5 hours at Elim - and he stayed for 5:20. Richie going out ahead means his team only got 2:12 rest, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out between them. I still wonder if, upon arrival at Elim, Pete discovered he hadn't gained any, so cut his losses?

Speculation: if Pete knew his team were getting tired and balky, maybe opted to wait for Richie and have him enthuse Pete's team to leave?

That said, neither Richie nor Pete's teams are moving very fast leaving Elim - I didn't watch Ryan along this stretch out on the ice just past there, but they're only going ~6 mph or less. Maybe they both have balky dog teams? Or maybe the trail is particularly bad right there?

Matt Hall came into Elim running at 10.7 mph on the hills leading down into town. If they are having issues Matt could be in a position to pick them off (although his team is working on 3:45 rest at Koyuk, so shouldn't be amazingly peppy).

Jessie, Eddie, and Matt Failor (who Eddie overtook when Matt stopped to snack) are past Kelly and just about past Mille. They are going to have to run all the way to WM without a significant break to hold those positions (from Kelly), since Kelly has been resting for 3.5 hours, so should get going in the next 30 mins and can go all the way to WM.

Or maybe it was just time to leave for Pete, and Richie dove out ahead to try and pull some distance : ) ) ) ) )

Matt is definitely in the hunt - he went through Elim in minutes and is heading back out onto the ice. I'll watch his mph along there to see if it's tired dogs or difficult trail right there that is slowing them down.

Well that answers that - looks like the trail is not great right there:

Ryan is just about to WM, but in the last 1,000 yards or so some snowmachines and a guy running the other direction on the trail confused the dogs and they went off trail. He's having to stop the team, pull the lead dog back into position over by the trail, and then start them off again. But they are insistent they want to go east, not north, so he had to repeat the maneuver several times over.

Now he's got them going again and they are trotting, but a few cracks there for sure.

He only has 7 in harness, one in the bag that he puts back in harness upon arrival.
