This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Snippets

Unfortunately, I'm AWOL this year so won't be able to provide snippets from the videos - I was gone to a 100-mile endurance (horse) ride over the long weekend, so didn't manage to get my TTPs done, or watch the start, and right now have not subscribed to Insider this year (had a hard time mustering goodwill towards the race given the events leading up to it). I may change my mind, but am fairly busy with work right now, so we'll see.

I'm guessing with most mushers on their 24s, there'll be a slew of interviews with good stories. Can someone post any interesting news here?

And can anyone tell me how far out from Cripple Dallas is camped? and do we have any info on how the trail is there? Did he have to break trail after Ophir and get slowed down, or....?

Thanks for any insight.

I also am having a hard time mustering the passion or good will toward the race. The passion has waned based on incidents in prior years, but events this year are the final straw for this camel. But here I am anyway. Couldn't stay away from the 'buds.

Hey Els, good to see you pop in. Seems it gets quieter in here every year. I haven't gotten the tracker the past few years, so afraid I'm no help. Honestly haven't missed it too much. Am annoyed that we had to pay to even watch the start. Don't understand how they think they will generate any new fans. :?

Those little half 'snippets' on the 'standings' page are outrageous = half sentences?

I succumbed and renewed at the 11th hour as couldn’t not have the tracker and videos. But it wasn’t done willingly.
Sad that every year we get less, last one out close the door and turn off the lights, but hopefully thats not for a long timt to come, I suppose we are not getting any younger any of us and we have lost a few good buds to guard our dogs that have gone down the trail. Don’t know how with other social media that we can attract new members?

There you are LC! I was worried and went to your FB page where I saw you had a big race last weekend.
news from the vids is Nic is going to 24 in Cripple. He has been carrying dogs in pairs to give them rest.

Good to see you LC - was wondering how you are.

Succumbed to subscribing. And am unexpectedly glad I did. I like the newly introduced dashboard.

Madly busy so relying on the buds as usual. Wonder how we can get more to join us . . .

Good to see you all.

Braider - I think those are just descriptions of the videos (that you can't watch unless you have Insider).

Looking at the field for this year.

  • Right now, there's only 5.5 hours between 3rd -11th place... and 3:15 between 3rd and 9th... that's close racing!
  • I think this is the most competitive Travis Beals has been in a while (early days, I know, but post-24 means we're seeing real positions instead of start positions).
  • Do we know why Richie Diehl isn't racing this year?
  • Or Kristy Berington? (although a quick look at their FB - seems she was doing another non-mushing event a few weeks back).
  • Nice to see Hunter Keefe doing so well. He seems like a cheerful soul who just enjoys mushing - and is good at it because of that.
  • I'm also happy to see Matt Hall up there - it's been a while for him.
  • I had high hopes for Paige this year - and it does look like she was fastest so far between Tak and Ophir, so we'll have to see if she can maintain that speed.
  • And Jason Mackey's doing good!
  • Did we hear anything about Mille? She was running up front at the start... did she overcook it too early?
  • I'm interested to see how Amanda Otto does as we get closer to the finish. She pulled off a really nice move in last year's YQ, so is a savvy racer. Is she saving things for up the coast?

(Edited to add:) Oh! Lookit - Calvin Daugherty (rookie) who is the son of long-time ID-musher Larry Daugherty (physician, radiation oncologist, father of five)! So fun to see a new generation show up.
