2024 scratches

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Gutted for him, he was saying earlier in the race they were a but flat, not lacking energy but desire to run wise. Hope he will come back. A friend had similar with his team years ago at a race in Italy, we were talking to the head vet at vet check who asked Leigh how a certain dog was running, he said fine but not quite enthusiastic as normal, she said, thought so, did she have a tick bite this summer, he confirmed she did and the vet said she could tell and she needed some medication of some type. He gave the meds and within a week or so she was back 100%. The Vet is Moncia Duran from Spain, a good friend of mine and amazing sled dog vet. Love working races with her, she has an incredible knowledge and eye for sled dogs. I wonder if it’s something as simple as that?

That is interesting news tangles, thanks for sharing it, sounds like a very good, aware vet.

It looks like Mumford has scratched in Unalakleet:

Rookie Iditarod musher, Bryce Mumford (bib #6), of Preston, Idaho, left the Kaltag checkpoint en route to Unalakleet at 6:56 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12. Iditarod snowmachiners were dispatched on the trail to make welfare checks after sufficient progress on the trail was not made.

After discussions with the Iditarod snowmachiners, Mumford decided he could make it to Unalakleet, where he then scratched at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in the best interest of his team.

Mumford had 12 dogs in harness when he arrived in Unalakleet, all in good health.

FB update from Deke:

Deke Naaktgeboren

Highs and Lows of mushing dogs is real!

That’s why it’s so fun, challenging, addictive, rewarding….disappointing.

Our year wasn’t meant to be this one, and that’s ok cuz we’ve had a lot of good times, great times, magical times through the last few years.

U gotta have some lows to appreciate the highs.

Something has been off with the team pretty much since the start of the race and the dogs told me last night it’s time to go home. I said ok! and now we are waiting for a plane ride home. Everyone is well, eating like pigs enjoying the sunshine in Nulato.

Thanks all for your support and for following…we shall mush on…just not today, and most importantly we are going to keep it FUN!

After much deliberation, Williams made the decision to scratch today, March 15 at 11:00 a.m. in
the best interest of his team.
Williams had 10 dogs in harness at the time of his scratch, all in good health.

Not very surprising... Noticed his tracker suddenly disappeared from the GPS
