"Mushing 101" Question

Postby libby the lab » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:53 am

I just started following mushing online with the Iditarod this year.
I was watching the Sweepstakes start a few minutes ago (thanks to the iditaproject camera on front street) and noticed a staggered start. If it the first one to cross the finsh line wins and it is close, is there some compensation made somewhere on the trail for the different start times?

Good question libby the lab .. and here's your answer 8-)

http://www.allalaskasweepstakes.org/RaceRules.html

from INTERPRETATION OF THE RULES SUPPLEMENT

3. The time differential will be made up at a randomly selected checkpoint decided by the lead judge just prior to the race start at 10:00 AM on March 26, 2008. Mushers should not sign in at this checkpoint until the dog count and dog identification is verified by the checker and himself. The differential checkpoint will remain confidential until the first musher’s arrival at that point.

Why do they need to keep it a secret?

Because the line-up of mushers at the AAS start were a Motley Crew of Back-country Sleddog Racing Pirates, historically known for using every trick in the book to gain an advantage in competition?

Why did Daniel, our TSFR, require us to edit our race picks with a total elapsed time?

Gotta spring a surprise on everyone just to keep it interesting.

Love your answer Breeze!

Because there's too much of a chance of a tie with only a Top 5 and so few mushers.
