2009 Poetry, Song and Limerick Thread

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

2009 Poetry, Song and Limerick Thread

Postby sugarriver » Tue Mar 03, 2009 10:43 am

Okay, I'll start; I know your minds are beginning to churn already.

Here we sit with fingers twitching
Start the race, the mind is itching!

Time to chat and post and read;
(Our not-so-secret, manic need.)

Good times, good laughs, good chats, good friends
Our “real world” temporarily ends,

Replaced with slack-jawed, sleep-starved gaze
As through the night we follow faves

Through piled-high drifts, o’er hills and floe
Wherever dogs and musher go.

We’re here until Red Lantern wanes,
With naught but passion in our veins.

Thankful we’re together here:
Iditabuddies – one more year!

We know each others jobs and names,
Our dogs, our kids, our loves and games,

We share our needs, our wants, our pains,
Our happy thoughts, our losses, gains.

We help through all the rights and wrongs
We laugh at witty rhymes and songs

We pull the circle extra tight
To help some make it through the night.

We’re here together – family:
It’s really not so strange you see;

We have a passion shared, though odd –
We live and breathe Iditarod!

Had to print this out Sugar. It will go on wall or somewhere I can see it often.
Very true what you said, we are family, and care about each others joys and woes.

I know you're all too busy now, what with the start and the chat and all; but remember this thread through the long nights of "watching" - it's a fun way to fill the time. Exceptional work just comes pouring out of MGFB and emwcee and some of the rest of our talented crew. :D There's BUNCHES of talent here - especially between 12:00 and 3:00 a.m. when they just can't turn in before ______ hits the next checkpoint, etc. Good outlet for the range of emotions that we're sure to have over the next couple of weeks or so. Have fun!! This is a very safe, supportive way to jump off the deep end and find your hidden muse.

Okay. Here's a quickie, just for you, Em!

There was a Jamaican named Newton
Who came all the way to the Yukon.
What he hadn’t been told
was it’s terribly cold.
He arrived with his jammin’ swim suit on!

Down the trail came a driver and team.
And they thought they were deep in a dream.
A half-naked Jamaican,
shiverin’ and shakin’?
Holy cow! Surely things aren’t what they seem.

Here, take my extra gloves and fur hat,
My spare parka, my boots, my cravat.
Why thank you, said Newton,
but teach me to mush, mon.
And that’s exactly how Newton met Gatt.
Wag more, bark less.
