2009 Poetry, Song and Limerick Thread

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Good haiku, cat. That reminds me, I wrote an Iditarod haiku for a poetry writing class I teach. One of the things I say to my students is that they should write poetry about whatever inspires them personally. To demonstrate, each week I share a poem I've written about sled dog racing. Here's my haiku:

Ribbons of green light
The best sunrise in the world
Decorate the trail.

And here is a cinquain. A cinquain is a five-line poem with a prescribed number of syllables: 2,4,6,8,2. It's similar to a haiku, but not as well known:

Huskies
Born for running
A thousand snowy miles
The musher is only the coach
Sled dogs.

I'm working on a song. Hopefully tomorrow we'll get it recorded and uploaded. Stay tuned. :D

Oops, I meant to quote part of your post in my last post, Eskil. But you saw it was meant for you anyway.

I like all the poems too, especially since everyone's so talented.

Oh and good morning, My New Favorite Singer! :D (Can I have your autograph?)

But alas, I MUST turn in now...

Eskil,

I so enjoyed reading your poetry as I scanned throught the posts, then I came back, and listened to you and Bibi singing it. Wow! You definitely have wonderful talent! Thank you so much for all the work you did to bring it to the forum. Congratulations!

OK, it's not a great work of art, but I did get inspired today. Here goes:

The Number Two Spot
It seems Lance Mackey’s in control of this race,
But the question remains, Who’ll take second place?
Will it be Sebastian or maybe Hugh Neff,
Both looking strong after a great Yukon Quest?
Or will it be Seavey or maybe Jeff King,
Duking it out in the boxers’ ring?
Or possibly Aaron will pull out ahead
Passing them all with his high-powered sled.
Don’t forget John Baker, who took first place
In the Kobuk 440 in 2008.
It’s still a close race, though not for number one
And it’s never really over till the last one is done.

Em, you're so talented...and MGFB too...and several others. :) :)

I don't even want to attempt to write something. And TRUST me, you do NOT want to hear me sing. My singing causes reactions worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. :o  :o

I hope one of you writes a poem about all the Iditabuddies. Or maybe someone already has and I forgot. That's entirely possible. :)

hello to all in this forum, im new here and have been looking at this site since yesterday, and im inspired by all of your good input going on here...my poem called the race, was written for susan butcher and was sent to her when she was in the hospital, i wrote it because i wanted to help give her some strength to beat her cancer, i knew that if she would be given the strength that her beloved team of dogs had, it would help her through just maybe a moment or an hour..i hope it did, she was the best....she inspired so many....and she loved.....her daughters will carry her spirit.....thank you for posting it.....bob putman......grizzman.
