Will Rick Swenson win again in the 2000's?

Postby dashdel » Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:59 am

I have him in my top ten.. I am glad Frozen has picked him as well.. Frozen you have a very good memory. Rick and Martin were the tough ones in 91.. Was a memorable year for the Swenson family..... I would like to see him continue his winning streak for a win in 2000's and make it 6 or really 7 wins. What a record!!!

I'd add to this his recent induction into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame. Also inducted this year was Joe Redington Sr.

While I wouldn't mind him getting another win, I'd be thoroughly S.H.O.C.K.E.D. if he does!! :o :o :o
I just think he peaked already, but I'd find it a hoot if he proved me wrong! :D

It's good to see you here dashel - I hope OBracer shows up. katswenson, too.

Who's the oldest to win this race? ...or the Quest?

Here's a bit I gleaned from ADN about the Hall of Fame ceremony:

In a touching moment, Joee Redington pulled out an old, hand-written note he found while cleaning out his parents' house and handed it to Swenson. It was a letter dated 1973 and written by Swenson, who was 23 at the time. In it, he told Redington that he "hoped to run the race" one day.

I've always wondered if anybody has a good Rick Swenson/Ted Nugent/Iditarod story. :) Frozen? katswenson? :)

I'm so old I'm older than Rick Swenson. ...Dave

Sorry... but, Swenson will never win again. He will never make the Top 10 again either. He will be lucky to make Top 20. He still is an incredible musher, but his days of being competitive are over. Age catches everyone eventually.

I disagree - there are a lot of mushers in the race that have a chance to win and Rick is certainly one of them.

Are you THE Bigskymusher? :)

Good question Dave. In terms of the iditarod, I'm thinking of maybe Joe May or ***** Mackey. Jerry Riley would come a close second. Carl Huntington was pretty young, probably the youngest to win (early 20s).

Bit a trivia: Has anyone ever won the Big Three: the Fur Rondy (World Championship Sled Dog Race), North American Sled Dog Race, and the Iditarod. If so , who?
