I just feel sick about this. I was pulling for Moon to finish this race. He's a great guy, and he really wanted to finish this race.

I interviewed him via Facebook for an article I wrote for the online site Suite101. I asked him what he saw as his biggest challenge on the trail. Interestingly, he didn't mention his health issues. Ironically, this is what he said: My biggest challenge is not knowing what is a mile up the trail. The verterans have all seen the trail prior, so when they see a particular tree, to them, it may indicate lean left in 50 feet. To me, I am most likely just going to think, "What a neat tree."

Chillingly predictive.

You're gonna give Craig a run for his money on tear-jerker writing! But thanks for that insight.

That is gotta be the hardest thing is not knowing what to expect around each and every bend in the trail.

Our prayers go out and up for Pat Moon tonight - I will get all my students praying tomorrow as well - I will go pull up your article from Suite 101 to let them read that as well!

I was so hoping he'd finish! His story truly endeared him to me.
I am glad his dogs are good. Something like this can really go sideways, fast.
Wishing Pat the best,

Yes Gate, "endeared" is a good word! I watched a few Insider interviews with him and he seemed so sincere & good hearted!
So sorry his Iditarod journey ended so quickly.....hope he managed to gather some good memories from his time on the trail despite the outcome!

Yes Marcia that reference is a bit eerie...yikes!

Pat will be back, I'm sure. Chicago boys are tough!
I "know a guy" Pat! You want I should send him out to the gorge to take care of that tree?

Wow, what a disappointment to have this happen. However, the human spirit he displayed is inspiring. He's a winner in my book. so glad he and his dogs are safe.
