White Mountain - Safety - Nome and BOP

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

cindy got pulled i think, she was stopped for a while after safety then was suddenly going 16 mph, her tracker came cross the line but on the live no one arrived, they have her as finished but no sign in the chute of her at that time, only victoria left who camped for 6 hrs at the bottom of the hills before heading to safety. she is moving but is only hlaf way from WM to safety, wonder if they will pull her?

Cindy Gallea scratches at Safety checkpoint
Anchorage, Alaska –– Veteran Iditarod musher Cindy Gallea (bib #53) of Wykoff, Minn.,
scratched at 12:00 a.m. this morning at the Safety checkpoint.
Gallea made the decision to scratch in the best interest of her race team, which is her
No. 1 priority.
Gallea had seven dogs in harness at the time she made the decision to scratch.

But it looks like Victoria's got this!!!

She's coming down the backside of Cape Nome with just 10 miles to go!

Go Victoria!

Victoria is in!
Nice gathering, on the Nome Cam, at the somewhat deconstructed chute, but the arch is still up.

I figured out why they took the banner down - they needed it in the banquet - they had it on the wall for the awards.

Ah, that explains the banner coming down Sunday, thanks Elsietee.

A little bit of race trivia - slowest (longest?) Red Lantern time since 2009, when Timothy Hunt came in at 15 days/14 hrs/6mins/22secs, won by Lance. And the fewest number of finishers since 38 made it to Nome in 1989, Joe Runyan won this race.
