Finger Lake Checkpoint #1

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Finger Lake Checkpoint #1

Postby aren » Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:54 am

Ok. Which team will reach Finger lake as # 1. Jeff King and Gerry Willomitzer were the first to leave Skwentna, but both are probabely resting along the trail.
According to the gps tracking both Aily and Kjetil has left Skwentna. Aily has 4 miles to the position where Jeff is resting and Kjetil is anther 4 miles behind Aily. Ken Anderson seems to be right behind Kjetil, but his speed is shown as Zero. Strange, but he seems to be mooving anyway. Gerry is not equipped with the tracking device so his position is somewhat "in the dark".....

alot of mushers will blow through and rest the other side of skwentna as it means they dont have to sit in the equvilant to the largest kennels in the world with all the dogs barking, mushers fans and chekers, snow machines, planes etc all busying themselves about the place, better rest for the dogs, so most guys try and stop a 1/2 hour run or so out of the checkpoint. people like jeff will know of a spot that they stop every year on thr trail out that they can get some good dog rest on.

Agree. Skwentna is no place to stay. I bet most of the mushers have had their special rest spot between Skwentna and Finger Lake scouted out long before the race.

Interesting to see that some of the high bibs really have pushed hard to get into position.

Looks like the over the pond boys are active in the forum his morning. 6:30am local time here. Feeding time!!I agree with not staying invFinfger lake!! Love the tracker, just the limited number of "carriers" makes comparisons difficult!!.

mid day here, been catching up for a few hours after a 8 hour rest haha, should put me 'on schedule' with the mushers over the next few days, they tend to run at night, which is day time here, and vise versa. AK is 9 hours behind us in the uk...
good to see u checkin' in....feeding time for the kiddies then?

Yep, all just got bottles!! Their at about a 4hr "feed rest feed" schedule, so we'll check in as we can. I'm just a backup feeder/changer; daughter-in-law and wife do most, but with 3 it gets hectic!! Seems like the official forum is having standing update issues, nothing new, just a lot of mushers and hectic I'm sure.... Too early for major moves anyway!!

If the tracker is anything to believe it shouldn't be too long now before we start getting mushers into Finger Lake (unless there's some resting to be done, that is). Kjetil is currently first of those with tracking equipment, and it seems like Ally is resting.

Well since it looks like nap time for the mushers I'm going to get dressed and go to work. It will be another 4-5 hours at least before we start to see any real action at Finger lake.

Man I wish the ITC computer geeks had remembered to install a printer friendly link to the stat pages!

Yes, Kjetil Backen is defenitely pushing for Finger Lake, and I'm hoping Rainy Pass too. Quite interesting with the GPS-monetoring, but where "the others" are is quite the thrill...

It's quite a guessing game. Kjetil is now only 6 miles from Finger Lake.
