2021 Iditarod Race

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

I'm curious how Jessie Royer, and any other Iditarod racer is going to get to Alaska. Any ideas? americans can drive direct to alaska in 4 or 5 day window.what I dont understand is how our canadian mushers get across to race.

Dumb question: on the route back, is there a parallel trail, or is it normally wide enough for teams approaching from opposite directions, or will it be a mess when you have half going one way and half the other?

I was thinking about this myself. They usually do overtake each other from time to time, so they kind of used to that. Perhaps they have some rule that the outbound team will give way for the inbound teams? I was just thinking about.. one team passing with a couple of bitches in heat for instance and the teams is supposed to go in different direction. That could be fun :)

I'm very curious on how the race will be. Usually the weather plays a big part on the coast.. and sometimes up the river, of course that might happen this year as well, but most likely not that much. Now it's the stretch to Iditarod that is the big challenge trail-wise, perhaps?

That trail up the gorge and steps will be bottomless by the time they return. Unless the breaker clan have something up their sleeve, gonna be some hot and sweaty mushers going UP the steps, but kinda fun.. be good to see it if they film it.

According to ITC officials during a virtual musher meeting back in January, they are well aware of how much "damage" the trail will endure during the first pass and they have promised to deploy trail teams on known problematic sections (like the Gorge) immediately after the last team passes through in order to rebuild the trail in time for the return loop. Guess we will see whether that actually turns out to be reality, but they recognized the potential problem not too long after deciding this was going to be a big loop.
