Scratches

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Scratches

Postby libby the lab » Mon Mar 08, 2021 5:30 pm

Gallea became ill (non-COVID-19-related) and made the decision to scratch in the best interest
of her race team.

With sadness we wanted to let everyone know that Cindy scratched from the race. She developed severe vertigo and nausea to the point she is unable to stand, let alone drive a sled and manage the care of her 14 best friends. In the 2014 Iditarod, she developed the same issue causing her to scratch from the race. The symptoms in 2014 lasted a number of days.
She is resting at friends in Anchorage and dogs are doing great. She said dogs had an amazing 65 mile run.
Damon will be flying up in the morning to help take care of our gal and dogs. We pray her symptoms subside soon and her spirit mends quickly.
I'll send out an update when we know more information soon.

Damn, she went through a nightmare to get to the start. Think it was her last race too this year.

I also suffer with vertigo. The first time was the worse, throwing up, so dizzy I couldn't stand up it was awful. Sometimes I stagger like I was drunk. You never know when it will hit either, the other morning I tried to stand getting up from my bed, the whole room spun, lasted a few minutes then but hitting Cindy on the trail when she is responsible for the lives of her dogs must have been terrible.

Poor Cindy, why couldn't it wait till after the race?!

My heart hurts:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8, 2021
Statement from Iditarod Race Marshal Mark Nordman:
At approximately 8 p.m. today, Iditarod veteran musher Aliy Zirkle (bib #32) of Two Rivers,
Alaska, was injured while coming in to the Rohn checkpoint. Aliy is in stable condition but based
on information provided by a volunteer with medical training, I notified the Alaska State
Troopers and the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center for assistance. The Alaska RCC is airborne
and en route to the checkpoint to pick up Aliy and will transport her to Anchorage for further
evaluation. Her dog team is in Rohn and being well cared for by volunteers at the checkpoint.
