Stop press Aliy injured

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Rats, have to be a subscriber to read it. But nice to know it made your news. I need to check what my paper has to say.

Edit to say, nothing found in paper. They usually only report if a musher tests positive for drugs. they think there are no fans of sled dog racing in Florida.

<sigh> Such a bummer - hope she's OK.

Dallas (who was second into Rohn) said the trail was "adventurous but doable". Wondering if it wasn't quite as "doable" after 25 or so teams had gone over it.

Whatever it was, it didn't delay her significantly on the trail - I see one slight blip about two miles outside of Rohn. Anna Berington was right behind her and seemed to catch up, so maybe offered help? Wondering if she whacked her head (which seems to be a good reason to medevac)?

Praying for Aliy and all who have responded to help her when she was injured! Thankful for the well trained volunteers and first responders who cared for her, and for the volunteers caring for her dogs. Prayers for her family coming to be with her!

elsie, I had the same thought about a head injury. Pure speculation, but...those are very much the sort of thing that could have occurred hours earlier on the trail, and seemed ok at first, allowing her to make it to the checkpoint safely - and then gotten worse as swelling occurred, necessitating the medivac. When I used to lead backpacking trips any loss of consciousness was an automatic evac, for just that reason. We know a lot more now about the effects of concussions and I would think the Iditarod would be aware of and thoughtful about that.

Anyway, we have no idea if that's anywhere close to accurate until they post another update, so I'll just keep sending good thoughts her way.

They haven't listed her as scratched. And the standings show her in Rohn at 20:05. Maybe the ITC is waiting for more news, too.
