elsie, I had the same thought about a head injury. Pure speculation, but...those are very much the sort of thing that could have occurred hours earlier on the trail, and seemed ok at first, allowing her to make it to the checkpoint safely - and then gotten worse as swelling occurred, necessitating the medivac. When I used to lead backpacking trips any loss of consciousness was an automatic evac, for just that reason. We know a lot more now about the effects of concussions and I would think the Iditarod would be aware of and thoughtful about that.
Anyway, we have no idea if that's anywhere close to accurate until they post another update, so I'll just keep sending good thoughts her way.
