The maths on this is SO hard.
Distances:
Nik - 601 - 75 miles to
Rohn - 676 - 35 miles to
RP - 711 - 30 miles to
FL - 741 - 40 miles to
SKW - 781 - 87 miles to
Finish - 868

He rested at mile 655 - so 126 miles to SKW... two 63 mile runs with a 3 hour rest in the middle?
For Aaron Burmeister and Brent Sass, both of who camped on the trail around 10 miles past Nikolai, the path forward is a little more uncertain. ...
170 miles for them to SKW... two monster 85 mile runs, or three 55 mile runs (with two 3 hour rests in there?)?
At this stage in the Iditarod, it is far more likely for teams to choose to guard their current position rather than risk not getting their team to the finish with a risky move.
That's a
very good point!
About an hour behind the Redington/Sass duo is Wade Marrs, who has quietly put himself within reach of the leaders by running a solid, conservative race that shows improved patience over previous years.
Ryan's last rest was at Nik - 601 - of 4.5 hours. So 180 miles to SKW... three 60 mile runs? (two 90 mile runs seems too much?)
And rounding out the lead group are Joar Leifseth Ulsom (who put in a massive 12-hour run from McGrath to put himself in contention once again), Richie Diehl, and Mille Porsild.
Joar is resting at mile 634 - so 147 miles to SKW - that's two ~75 mile runs, or three 50 mile runs. Depends how quickly he can get back through the Gorge. He has 13 dogs, so still strong.
(It is just me, or do the teams seem larger than usual for this late in the race? Mushers holding onto their dogs so they have the power to get back through the mountains?)
